Part 1 of a 7 part series

Each and every year around this time we start thinking about what our New Year resolutions will be and what goals will we set for ourselves this year. It also seems like year after year, we set those goals and resolutions only to forget about them completely a few days or weeks later. Why don’t we make the choices that would help us to actually be our best selves now? It is no one's job to make us happy but us. I declare that it is time to reclaim our money, our time and our purpose. Every year can be your year if you truly want it to be. It all starts with focusing on ways to better yourself every single day.


Bettering yourself is a journey. Enjoy every step.

Forgive yourself.

We all make mistakes. We all do things at some point that later on down the road we regret. If you have wronged someone you care about and feel the need to ask them for forgiveness, then my all means, start there. But a huge part of forgiveness, is forgiving yourself. We are all human. We all make mistakes. You simply cannot move on with your life and become all your Creator has planned for you to be if you are still hanging on to past mistakes, carrying them around like luggage. It gets heavy after a while. So take the time to unpack that luggage, acknowledge each thing in it, and then toss it to the curb where it belongs. Love yourself. Be as forgiving to yourself as you would be to others. I know its hard, but it's a life changer.

Stop making excuses.

So many times we set goals and then slowly but surely we start tacking on the excuses until we just aren't interested in completing those goals anymore. Sometimes, our mind is so good at coming up with excuses that we have actually convinced ourselves that we actually cannot do something! There is pretty much nothing that you cannot do. Sure if you live a sedentary life now, you cannot run a marathon tomorrow. But you can walk to the mailbox and back tomorrow. You can walk 5 minutes the next day, and 6 the next, and 7 the day after that. And so on and so on until before you know it, some time has passed and you have signed yourself up to compete in the upcoming marathon in your city and you are officially training for that marathon. No excuses! If there is something you want, and you want it bad enough, you will find a way to make that happen. Just break those goals down until they are in manageable sizes and do-able. Make it happen!

Watch your thoughts.

Your thoughts will determine your life. This is probably one of the most important points in this entire post. If you tell yourself you cannot do something, you can’t. If you tell yourself you will never be able to run your own business, you won’t. If you tell yourself you are not beautiful, you won’t see your actual beauty. Imagine yourself as a sort of security guard for your mind. You cannot let negative thoughts be on the premises. Be mindful of your thoughts and thought processes. If a negative thought pops up (and they will) then kick it out. Tell it that it is not allowed to stay in your mind. Immediately turn whatever the negative thought was into a positive one and tell that to yourself. Let me explain. Let’s say you are walking down the street, feeling pretty good about yourself, and you happen to notice this beautiful lady walk by and here comes this thought, “you know you are nowhere near as pretty as her. You will never be that pretty”. Acknowledge the thought. Kick it out. Tell yourself the positive counter-thought. I am pretty. Yes, she is pretty. But I am equally as pretty. I am so grateful for my natural and unique beauty bestowed upon me by my Creator. See how this works? Awesome!

Create goals with action plans.

Take the time to create a list of all the things you would like to better about your life. Exercise more. Drink more water. Read more books, Meditate more. Those are just a few examples. Once you have your list, go through and prioritize it. Choose what you want to work on first. If you try to fix everything all at once, you are setting yourself up for failure. Let’s just choose one at a time. For example, I want to drink more water each day. My goal  is to drink 8 cups of water each day. Maybe I could create a chart and hang it somewhere very visible to me where I can check off each cup I have during the day. This way I have a very visual way to keep my goal present throughout the day. I could even set reminders on my cellphone to go off at specific times throughout the day to remind me to drink a glass of water. This is just an example of one say to create an action plan for a goal. There are innumerable ways. You do what works best for you.

Some other ways to better yourself:

  • Smile at yourself when you look in the mirror
  • Dance more
  • Laugh more
  • Get more sleep
  • Keep a daily journal
  • Meditate daily
  • Be unapologetically YOU!!
